Programs That Make a Difference

Youth and families served are able to move seamlessly from one program or service area to another within the agency. YSFS is able to offer an integrated continuum of services under one organizational roof, including shelter, counseling, case management, life skills development, and other services—an approach whose effectiveness has been demonstrated by research and evaluation. In addition, all YSFS programs use a strengths-based, youth development approach, incorporating evidence-based practices that build assets in young people, families, and communities.

Youth Shelters and Family Services operates programs in two service areas:

Homeless Services

Clinical Services

  • Outpatient Counseling, for individuals, families, groups, to at-risk children, youth, and families, with referrals from schools, social service agencies, community-based programs, and other sources;
  • Juvenile Community Corrections, providing client services management, monitoring, creative arts and supervision for adolescents, ages 12-18, and their families, who are reintegrating into the community from detention facilities or who are at risk of being incarcerated;

Youth Shelters and Family Services will continue to work collaboratively with all the community coalitions, advocacy groups, and other agencies that serve children and families in our communities: the New Mexico Children Youth and Families Department, the City of Santa Fe Children & Youth Commission, the United Way of Santa Fe County, the New Mexico Youth Providers Alliance, the Santa Fe Youth Providers Coalition, and many other non-profit and community-based organizations that form the backbone of our social services system.

Over the years the work of Youth Shelters and Family Services has received regional and national attention. In 1990, the agency received the Margaret W. Driscoll Award for outstanding community service from the Santa Fe Community Foundation, and in 1991 YSFS was cited in the Federal Assistance Monitor as a model program for family reunification with runaway and homeless youth, and in the Helping the Homeless Journal as a model program for working with drug and alcohol-involved runaway and homeless youth. In 2002 the First Contract Street Outreach program was awarded the prestigious Piñon Award from the Santa Fe Community Foundation, and in 2003 YSFS received the Increasing Self-Sufficiency Award from the United Way of Santa Fe County.
